Whisky Run Golf Club Burger Review – Port Colborne, ON
This one had all the makings of a tough review. I'm a member at Whisky Run Golf Club on Lorraine Road in Port Colborne, and one of my best friends, Luke, is part of the owners' family. None of that mattered. The burger from the Bootlegger Bistro scores an 8.4 and lands at #31 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.
A 100% truthful review, as requested
I asked Luke ahead of time whether he wanted the truth or wanted me to beef it up a little. He wanted the truth. He didn't even know when I was coming.
The visit happened almost by accident. Robyn and I had just had a vegan burger somewhere else that didn't do it for us, and we were told Whisky Run carried Beyond burgers. When Robyn called, there were no Beyond burgers that day, but there was a homemade beef burger: 8 ounces, made with prime rib, as Robyn remembered it. She has a better memory than I do.
My order
The usual: lettuce, onion and pickle only, for $13 flat. It was Dutch Open day at the club, and the kitchen was swamped. Even so, they handled the order without knowing it was for a review.
Inside: a nice thick patty, sliced onions, a little lettuce on the bottom and three long pickle slices that looked good. The juice was already showing.
First bite
One bite, everybody knows the rules, and I was relieved. It was good. The bun was toasted, and I could taste the toast. The patty delivered. I liked the pickles too, sliced the long way, with enough of them for a full-fledged pickle bite.
When I dissected it, the patty was cooked well: crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside, with juice running all over me.
How it adds up
- Bun: Toasted, and you can taste it.
- Patty: 8 ounces, homemade, crisp outside, juicy inside.
- Pickles: Sliced lengthwise, three per burger. I liked them.
- Onion and lettuce: Sliced onions and a bit of lettuce on the bottom.
- Value: $13 for a big homemade burger at a golf club.
My verdict
The only knock I could find was the missing Beyond burger. The beef burger itself is clearly not in the sixes, and with oddbird still the only place in the nines, I put it in the eights. Whisky Run earns an 8.4. I was kind of hoping to embarrass my buddy with a low score, but the kitchen didn't give me the chance.
