The Broken Gavel Burger Review – Fenwick, ON
The Broken Gavel on Canboro Road in Fenwick brought a first for my Gold Medal Burger quest: a special guest at the table. Jessica Wilson and I both took a bite, and the burger lands an 8.5 from me, good for #26 out of 140 on my rankings.
Enter Jessica Wilson
Jessica and I had both been to the Broken Gavel plenty of times, just never together. Completely unplanned, unscripted. Before the review, Jessica warned me she doesn't usually like onion or pickle on her burger. She was about to change her mind.
Our order
Two Gold Medal Burgers: a hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only. The total was $27.15 for two, about $13.57 each. Both came out in boxes and, as we found out, both were upside down. No big deal.
The toasted bun held a big patty that was for sure homemade and fresh off the grill, shredded lettuce that looked like romaine, onion and a pickle slice rather than a spear, which we both liked.
First bites
One bite, everybody knows the rules, and we were both impressed. I guessed the patty was a six or eight ounce burger. Jessica said she was not joking: she doesn't like onion and pickle, and this was really good. She even asked if she was allowed to keep eating.
The bun stood out. It was buttery, so they must have buttered it. The burger was juicy, and the kitchen was clearly not scared to put some calories on the plate. Go big or go home.
Bonus points for the dogs
I noticed water bowls out for dogs along with a dog treat ball. I was tempted to hand out bonus points just for that. The service was friendly too. They're good people.
The breakdown
- Bun: Toasted and buttery. Great.
- Patty: Big, homemade and juicy, maybe almost too big for the rest of the burger.
- Toppings: Shredded lettuce, a nice pickle slice and onion that could have been a little heavier.
- Value: About $13.57 each for a big homemade burger.
The scores
Jessica went first and gave it an 8.4. I was impressed. After dozens of these reviews, I can tell you that's a real score, and she basically nailed it on her first try. I thought about it and nudged mine just above hers to an 8.5. It isn't quite oddbird territory, but it's a really good burger.
My verdict
The Broken Gavel is usually packed, with waits of 20 minutes or more, and I wasn't surprised the burger was this good. I've had the meatloaf and the fish tacos here before, and those fish tacos were the first food I ever ate on camera for Must See Monday. With the patio open, we'll be back to make some happenings.
