Dawg's Burgers & Fries sits right on the water at the marina in Port Colborne, and that's where I kicked off a day of filming. I chatted with the owners, Doug and Joan, wonderful people who have been running the place for a few years now. The burger scores a 7.7, #60 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.

My order

The Gold Medal Burger came to $6.50, a good price. It's a homemade patty made from Joan's own secret recipe, which she would not tell me, with meat from Tender Cuts right here in Port Colborne. Lettuce and pickles, plus onions that came fried, on a toasted bun. It smelled delicious.

First bite at the marina

One bite, everybody knows the rules. Right away I got the crunch and the fried onions. My first bite barely nicked the patty, so I went back in. I spotted what I think was parsley in the meat. It was dripping juice, moist, cooked perfectly and seasoned well.

Bun, patty, onions and pickles

  • Bun: Fresh and toasted nicely.
  • Patty: Homemade, at least four ounces, juicy, with parsley in the mix. It reminded me of my mom's burgers.
  • Onions: Grilled onions, my favourite part.
  • Pickles: Horizontally sliced, sour and a little crisp.
  • Value: $6.50 is a great price for a homemade burger.

A matter of taste

Personally, I prefer a purer burger, and the parsley and other extras in the recipe pulled it away from what I look for. It was also falling apart a little. With Joan standing right there, I joked that there was no pressure at all.

Lakeside setting

I made sure Robyn got the water in the shot. Dawg's has one of the nicest settings on the quest, and having the owners right there to chat about their recipe and their local butcher made the visit even better.

My verdict

North of the sixes and into the sevens: a 7.7 for a good, well cooked homemade burger with grilled onions. If you're in Port Colborne heading down to the marina, stop at Dawg's and grab a burger.
