My cover was blown before I even got to Grill on Canboro Family Restaurant, at the corner of Canboro Road and Maple Street in Fenwick. The Gold Medal Burger scores a 6.8, good for #93 out of 140 on my rankings.

My order, and a lesson learned

Robyn called ahead, and the guy who answered knew right away what was going on when he heard "lettuce, onion, pickle only." He said he'd better not screw this up. Lesson learned: we're changing the name on Robyn's phone to something nobody will recognize. Do enough burger reviews and people start figuring things out.

The price was $8.98, just shy of nine bucks, and the burger came in a pretty legit styrofoam container.

What came out

A toasted bun, lettuce, a couple of rings of red onion with good distribution, and vertically sliced pickles on a backyard patty. On the side, instead of fries, was a small cup of coleslaw with a pickle.

One bite, everybody knows the rules

Super hot. The bun was so hot it was burning my hand, enough that I wondered if it had been steamed. There's a lot of bun. But the burger came fresh off the grill with some juice to it, and it made a decent backyard burger.

The side that won me over

Some of you get upset when a side comes with the burger. I'm not upset about this one at all. That coleslaw is really just disguised lettuce or cabbage plus a pickle, so I could almost put it right on the burger and it would still count. I tried it and loved it. I like coleslaw better than French fries anyway.

The breakdown

  • Bun: Toasted and very hot, with plenty of it.
  • Patty: Backyard, hot off the grill with some juice.
  • Toppings: Red onion rings and vertically sliced pickles.
  • Value: About nine dollars, good compared to $20 burgers I've thrown in the garbage.

My verdict

A decent backyard burger at a good price earns Grill on Canboro a 6.8. If you're in Fenwick, my advice is to either fire up the barbecue or come here. I've also been here for their stir fry, I hear their teriyaki is great, and they serve drinks now too.
