Robyn and I made the trip to Niagara-on-the-Lake for the second time on my Gold Medal Burger quest, this time to Bricks & Barley, a newer spot known for pizza and craft beer. The vibe won me over before I even walked in. The burger scored a 7.4, #70 out of 140 burgers on my rankings.

Someone recognized me before I got through the door, the bartender knew exactly what I was there for, and we had a little gallery inside watching. I even ran into someone I went to high school with.

My order

Lettuce, onion and pickle only, for $13.56. Some would call that expensive, but I'd just paid over $21 for a burger elsewhere in town, so this felt reasonable for Niagara-on-the-Lake.

I liked what I saw. Instead of a spear, they took a pickle and cut it up, which makes for much better distribution. There was a toasted bun, iceberg lettuce, a couple of red onion rings and a patty that was homemade all day. No backyard burger here.

First bite

One bite, everybody knows the rules. Good flavour, and some juice that I think was coming from the pickle. I was torn because I liked the place so much, but I give honest reviews. The burger is good, not great. The seasoning was good and the meat was clearly quality, but the patty was grey through the middle and overcooked. You can't hide an overcooked burger.

Breakdown

  • Bun: Toasted.
  • Patty: Homemade with quality meat and good seasoning, but overcooked and not very juicy.
  • Toppings: Iceberg lettuce, red onion rings and a cut-up pickle for even distribution.
  • Value: $13.56, still not cheap, but much better than other options in town.

My verdict

I compared it with the other Niagara-on-the-Lake burger I'd just reviewed. That one was a better burger, but I had to take out a loan to pay for it. Bricks & Barley isn't quite as good but it's far better value, and it earns a 7.4. I'll keep coming to Niagara-on-the-Lake for the scenery, the flowers and ice cream on Queen Street, and I hear there are more good burgers to find.
