A lot of people told me I had to try Burger Barn. So I drove an hour to Ohsweken with my good buddy Paul to find out. Burger Barn scores a 5.8, good for #119 out of 140 burgers on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.

My order

Lettuce, onion and pickle only, at a flat $10.99 with no tax on the reserve. Paul and I were out with our wives, ordering these to go while everyone else ordered from the menu. The wait was a long one: about 40 minutes. Our young server was very friendly, and I didn't run into one person I didn't like.

A first look

This one had something I'd never seen on the quest: minced pickles, spread evenly across the whole burger. There was also red onion and lettuce on a custom brioche bun, and the patty looked charbroiled.

One bite, cheers

One bite, everybody knows the rules. Paul spoke first: a little dry. Paul's right. The patty was dry and the bun wasn't toasted. The flavour was good, and the outside had a crispy, slightly greasy char like it was done on a barbecue, but we weren't dripping here. I don't think they were cooking the burger for 40 minutes, but it was dry all the same. We drove an hour for a dry burger.

  • Bun: A good brioche, but not toasted.
  • Patty: Charbroiled with nice flavour, but dry.
  • Pickles: Minced and perfectly evenly distributed, a first.
  • Onion: Red onion, and good.
  • Value: $10.99 flat. The price is right.

The scores

Paul, a fellow salt connoisseur who sometimes eats his burgers without the top bun, went with a 6.8. He admitted he had expected something like an eight from all the hype. A very professional, very friendly score from Paul. I went with a 5.8. If this burger was cooked correctly, it would have a lot of potential.

My verdict

A 5.8 for Burger Barn. The flavour, the bun and the evenly spread pickles all show promise, but after an hour's drive and a 40-minute wait, a dry patty hurts. It's still a very edible burger, and I was excited to try a soup on the table that I had never seen before.
