Trappers Sports Bar at 279 King Street, at the corner of King and Albert in Welland, is a place I know well. I've been in plenty of times for a few drinks and played in its famous football pool. But I had never eaten a hamburger there. That changed on my Gold Medal Burger quest, and Trappers scores an 8.4, good for #29 out of 140 on my rankings.

My order

The usual: a hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only. It came to $9.61. The bag was stuffed with napkins, tons and tons of them, which I appreciated, especially since I'd only asked for one.

Inside: a patty they told me was homemade, a toasted bun that looked buttered, red onion, pickles and lettuce, all held together with a toothpick. It was hot and looked real good.

A guest drops by

Before I got far, a guy named Mike walked up, and I offered him a bite. I explained the rules: take one bite and score it from zero to ten. Mike said it was juicy and pretty good, then gave it a 3.

His reason? He likes ketchup and mustard on his burger. I think a 3 is a ridiculously low score, and this burger is a lot better than that, but Mike was a good sport about the whole thing and I thanked him for the cameo. That's the kind of moment that only happens when nobody knows a review is coming.

First bite

One bite, everybody knows the rules. I found a juicy, filling burger, and a big one for the money. The bun was toasted nicely, the patty was cooked well and onions were falling everywhere. My one note: I could have used a few more pickles.

The breakdown

  • Bun: Toasted nicely and buttered.
  • Patty: Homemade, big and cooked well.
  • Toppings: Plenty of onion and lettuce. The pickle could have been heavier.
  • Value: A big burger for $9.61.

My verdict

Trappers turned out to be a solid burger stop, not just a place for drinks and the football pool. For under ten dollars you get a big, filling homemade burger. Mike gave it a 3. I gave it an 8.4. If you like your burger without ketchup and mustard, trust my number.
