Right next to the Beer Store on Thorold Road in Welland sits Mister Chips, a fry truck people had been telling me about for a long time. On my first visit, the burger lived up to the talk. Mister Chips scores an 8.5 and ranks #21 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.

Meeting the owner

I met the owner, a great guy, who asked me to go easy on him. I told him I'd be fair. While Robyn and I waited, people out front swore by the poutine, saying it's the best around and they won't eat it anywhere else. A buddy of mine had said the same thing. But I wasn't there for the poutine.

My order

The Gold Medal Burger: a hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only. It cost $6, and I could tell right away it had some weight to it. When the owner asked whether I wanted my onions raw or on the grill, I couldn't decide, so he gave me both.

It came on a big toasted bun with diced iceberg lettuce, raw onion, grilled onions and pickles underneath the patty. The juice coming off that burger was a nice start.

First bite

My only worry was that the bun looked a little big. One bite, everybody knows the rules, and I saw the light. I see the hype. The patty had a nice char that tells me it's done on a flat top, it was juicy and the bun was fresh. I could practically hear the juices.

The owner was back there, and sometimes owners like to stand around and make me nervous. Not this time. When a burger is this good, he can stand right next to me.

The double onion move

The highlight was the onions. Raw and grilled together kicked this burger up, and I love the creativity. Some people say they only like raw, some like grilled, and Mister Chips gives you both.

  • Bun: Big and toasted, but the patty is big too, so the ratio works.
  • Patty: Juicy with a good char.
  • Onions: Raw and grilled. A fantastic touch.
  • Pickles: The weak spot. Super sour on their own, though fine with the burger.
  • Value: Great. One of the most affordable burgers on my quest at $6.

My verdict

This is what the quest is about: finding a great burger in an unlikely spot. You can return your empties next door and walk right over for a burger. The only thing that would push this one higher is a different pickle. As it stands, it's not quite in the nines, but it's smack dab in the middle of the eights. Mister Chips earns an 8.5.
