How Blue Star Welland Handled a Bad Burger Review
Not every Gold Medal Burger review goes well, and it breaks my heart when one doesn't. What matters next is how the restaurant handles it. In this home office update, I gave a lot of credit to Blue Star in Welland.
A tough review
Blue Star is one of my favorite places for breakfast, but its burger review didn't go well. The score was low, a 3.9. One big problem: the burger came with no pickles, so it wasn't really a Gold Medal Burger. I'm not sure if that was a one-day thing or if they don't normally carry pickles.
How Blue Star responded
Instead of getting upset, Blue Star posted on its business Facebook page and tagged me. The post showed a picture of a proper Gold Medal Burger: bun, patty, lettuce, onion and pickle. The message to me was simple. Want pickles? Johnny makes sure all his customers are happy, and Blue Star has homemade pickles. Come in and try it.
I loved it. Rather than turning into a keyboard warrior from a personal account, Blue Star took the feedback, made it right and invited me back, all on their own fan page.
The response paid off
That post drew plenty of engagement: about 86 likes, laughs and loves, 50 comments and eight shares. A local Welland memes page even did its own take on it.
Compare that with places that got much better scores, like a 7.1, and still reacted badly. Without naming names too directly, some places go after me online and only draw more attention to the review. Blue Star did the opposite and made light of a bad score.
What's next
I'll definitely be back at Blue Star for breakfast soon. Another burger review isn't certain, with lots of places still to visit on the quest, but I want to try those homemade pickles either way. Blue Star turned a heartbreaking review into something positive, and they deserve tons of credit for it.
