Butcher and Banker in Fonthill is just up the street from my office, and I've had lunch there a few times, so it was overdue for a Gold Medal Burger review. I gave it an 8.9, good for #11 out of 140 burgers on my rankings.

My order

Robyn placed the order on a busy weekday: the original burger with lettuce, onion and pickle only, no tomato and no condiments. The total was $16.94. They said it would take 15 minutes. It was ready when we got there in about ten.

It came in a plastic bag with napkins and a recyclable container instead of styrofoam, and I'm sure some of you would give points for that alone. A toothpick held the burger together.

First look

I found a lightly toasted bun I believe is brioche, romaine lettuce, vertically sliced pickles and red onion rings. The patty looked homemade, with juices showing right away. It felt heavy in my hand. At almost 17 dollars, you at least get some weight.

First bite

One bite, everybody knows the rules. I'd eaten lunch just a couple of hours earlier and this was still a good burger. The patty was thick and juicy, with juice going everywhere. I also spotted what looked like onions mixed into the patty.

The breakdown

  • Bun: Brioche, lightly toasted and good.
  • Patty: Thick, juicy and homemade, with a nice char and some crispy bits I liked.
  • Toppings: Romaine, vertically sliced pickles and red onion rings.
  • Value: $16.94 is on the pricier side, but the size helps.

Getting the extras in

Robyn and I were filming a few extra reviews because she was about to leave on a week-long trip to Alberta, leaving me behind to work with no one to film.

My verdict

oddbird can relax for a moment, because this one isn't quite at that level. It's still a very good burger that rivals any I've had in Fonthill, and one more bite of just the patty sealed an 8.9. I can't believe it took me this long to try it. Next time I'm at work and feel like a burger, I'll probably sneak out to Butcher and Banker.
