I had eaten burgers at My Place Bar & Grill in Fonthill twice before the Gold Medal Burger quest, and I didn't like either one. The first time I couldn't even finish it. So it took some convincing to bring the quest to the spot on Highway 20 near Pelham Street. This time it scores a 6.8, good for #97 out of 140 on my rankings, and a big step up from my past experiences. Hey, I believe in second chances.

A heads-up from the chef

I ordered and sat at the bar, and the chef came out to find me. "You the burger guy?" He wanted me to know their burger is different now. They used to bring patties in from elsewhere, and now they mix their own beef every few days. He had no idea I had bad memories of the old burger, so the timing was perfect.

My order

A hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only, for $14.11, around average. The bun was a fancy one, toasted with sesame seeds. The lettuce was there but light, with red onions, horizontally sliced pickles and a pretty big, hot patty. It was close to what one viewer calls a naked Gold Medal Burger.

One bite, everybody knows the rules

Better than last time, no doubt. The patty was moist, not dry, but not juicy either. It had something of a backyard feel to me even though it's mixed in house. I could taste something on the bun, maybe butter.

Robyn passed on taking a guest bite, but she came up with a new burger class instead: the fancy garden party burger. Nice dainty bun, a little dainty lettuce, the kind of burger you'd serve at a garden party. I love it.

The breakdown

  • Bun: Fancy, toasted, sesame seeds, maybe buttered.
  • Patty: Fresh in-house beef, big and hot, moist but not juicy.
  • Toppings: Light lettuce, red onions and horizontal pickles.
  • Atmosphere: Good drinks and a good room, plus a few familiar faces stopping by.
  • Value: $14.11.

My verdict

We had a little on-camera confusion over the number, so let me settle it: a 6.8. It's many times better than my past visits, and this time I could easily finish it. It's just not a sexy burger. I bet it would go down very well with a gin and tonic inside at the bar.
