Blue Star Restaurant Burger Review – Welland, ON
The Blue Star on King Street in Welland is an icon. I used to come here all the time for the steak and eggs breakfast. So it was tough for me to give the Gold Medal Burger a 3.9, which places it #136 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.
My order, minus one
Robyn called in the usual order: a hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only. The Blue Star told her on the phone that they had no pickles. We went ahead anyway. A Gold Medal Burger without the pickle isn't ideal, but we weren't going to skip the stop.
The price was a flat $5.00, the cheapest burger on the quest at the time. Only recently, we'd had the most expensive one.
What came out
A toasted sesame seed bun, some lettuce, a slice of onion and a patty that looked like a backyard burger. And, as promised, no pickles. One bite, everybody knows the rules.
First bite
I was having a hard time with this one. The burger wasn't dry and it wasn't burnt, but it wasn't juicy either. Mostly, it was bland. A backyard burger with no pickle doesn't give you much to work with.
The breakdown
- Bun: Toasted sesame seed.
- Patty: Backyard style. Not dry, not juicy, just bland.
- Toppings: Lettuce and a slice of onion. No pickles available.
- Value: $5.00 flat, about as cheap as it gets.
Still a Welland staple
Let me be clear, I love the Blue Star. I've had the steak and eggs, and they're amazing. I've had the borscht and cabbage rolls, also amazing. This place has been around about as long as Welland itself, I'm pretty sure. The menu has tons of good stuff on it. The five-dollar hamburger with no pickles just isn't one of them.
My verdict
I hate to do it to one of my favourite breakfast spots, but the burger is a 3.9. My advice: go to the Blue Star, get yourself a great breakfast or a bowl of borscht and some cabbage rolls, and leave the burger aside.
