I'd been trying to put this one together forever. I finally made it to the Olympia Bar and Restaurant in the heart of Welland with a special guest, Andy, a fellow Welland fan. I'm a fan of his and he's a fan of mine. The Olympia scores a 6.2 from me, good for #106 out of 140 burgers on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.

My order

Two Gold Medal Burgers, lettuce, onion and pickle only, came to $14.69, or about $7.35 each. That's a great deal for Welland. The burgers came in a paper bag in tight styrofoam containers, a style I love.

A first look

The bun had a cornmeal-style dusting. Inside was lettuce, red onion rings and one horizontally sliced pickle that was an absolute unit. The patty looked like a pre-made backyard burger, and the first bite confirmed it.

Cheers and one bite

Andy and I cheersed our burgers and took our one bite. Everybody knows the rules. Andy liked the flavour in the patty, and I agreed there were some nice, even levels of flavour going on. We both danced around the pickle for a while before finally finding it. When we did, it was a good one: a little soft but with really good flavour. Another slice wouldn't hurt.

  • Bun: Soft with a cornmeal finish.
  • Patty: A backyard patty, but a good one with nice flavour.
  • Pickle: One enormous slice. Great flavour, could use a second.
  • Onion and lettuce: Red onion rings and lettuce.
  • Value: Excellent. Under eight dollars a burger.

The scores

Andy went big with a 7.5. Really generous, Andy. For me, it's hard for a backyard burger to get into the sevens, so I went with a 6.2. It's a good backyard burger, but it's still a backyard burger.

Go for the Greek

I'm a regular at the Olympia, but not for the burger. I come in for the Greek chicken salad, which is probably my favourite in town: a big bowl with lots of grilled chicken. They're full-on Greek back there in the kitchen, and the Greek food is delicious.

My verdict

If I'm on that side of Welland and need a burger, I'd have no problem grabbing one here, especially at this price. But if you're asking me what to order at the Olympia, it's the Greek chicken salad. That's exactly what Andy and I headed inside to get after the review.
