Crystal Chandelier Cafe Burger Review – Crystal Beach, ON
Crystal Beach is one of the most beautiful places in Niagara, and I came out to try the Crystal Chandelier Cafe, Etc. The burger scores a 5.9, good for #116 out of 140 burgers on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.
My order
I ordered a hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle. It cost $12.37, and when I picked it up I could already feel it: a whole pile of french fries I didn't order. Robyn's ruling was that when you order a hamburger, you have to say no sides. So next time, I'll list everything I don't want, from the bacon and egg sandwich to the Caesar salad to the draft beer.
A first look
The bun was something different: flat and thin. I wasn't sure what to call it, but I liked the idea, and it was heavily toasted, the way I like it. There was lettuce, a little red onion, some pickle, and a patty that looked homemade.
First bite
One bite, everybody knows the rules, and it was better than I thought. The fries had me down going in, but the flavour was good and it was not a backyard burger. The pickle was dripping.
- Bun: Thin and flat, a nice change, but a little over toasted. Not burnt, just overdone.
- Patty: Looks homemade, with good flavour.
- Toppings: Lettuce, a little red onion and a juicy pickle.
- Fries: Not ordered, and they cost the burger.
- Value: $12.37, with fries I didn't ask for.
The people
Even with the fries in my lap, I kept coming back to the bun. I liked the thin bun idea enough to take one more taste just to judge it again, and my read stayed the same: a good concept, cooked a touch too long.
I waited a few minutes inside and chatted with one of the guys at the bar and the woman working, maybe the owner. Very nice people.
My verdict
A 5.9. I like the thin bun concept and the flavour was still good, but between a slightly over toasted bun and fries I didn't order, this wasn't going to be one of my better scores. Nice people, beautiful town, but the Gold Medal Burger is lettuce, onion and pickle, and nothing else.
