Lots of people told me I had to try the burger at Cheers, the classic restaurant at the corner of East Main and Ross in Welland. I'd only been in once before, for a few drinks, and never eaten there. After one messy, memorable review, Cheers scores an 8.5, good for #23 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.

About that sign

Cheers is known around town for the big sign out front that's always loaded with messages. On review day it was promoting their open mic. My hope: if the burger was good enough, maybe the burger man on the corner would get a little props up there too.

My order

Same as always: a hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only, taken to go. The price was $10.11, right about on par with burgers around the area.

Opening the box was a surprise. There was lettuce, onion and a double patty on an untoasted bun, but the pickle came on the side, a half pickle wrapped in its own plastic. I didn't know how I felt about that. Then, while I was wrestling with the packaging, I dropped half the bun on the ground. On the burger quest you never know what's going to happen.

First bite, half a bun

One bite, everybody knows the rules, and this review was getting a little out of hand. The burger was hot, steamy and smelled delicious. Even though I didn't love how the pickle was delivered, I have to admit it might be the best pickle on the whole quest. Maybe it earned its own packaging after all.

The patty was juicy, flavourful and had a nice char on it. This is not a frozen patty, no way. It tasted homemade, like a great backyard burger, and if we didn't have more burgers to eat that day, I would have crushed the whole thing.

What stood out

  • Bun: Untoasted, and half of it ended up on the ground. That one's on me, not Cheers, so no marks off.
  • Patty: A homemade double patty, juicy with a bit of char.
  • Toppings: I liked the way the onions were done, and the pickle on the side was excellent.
  • Value: $10.11, about average for the area.

My verdict

I owe Cheers two apologies: one for dropping their bun and one for not coming in more often. The flavour was excellent, the double patty was great and it was nowhere near a six or a seven. It's in the coveted eights, and my rule for the eights is simple. If you're driving by the corner of East Main and Ross, pull over and get a burger. Cheers earns an 8.5.
