Wendy's Burger Review – Port Colborne, ON
A few chains have shown up on my Gold Medal Burger quest, but this was the first big, huge fast-food name: Wendy's. Robyn and I hit the brand-new location in Port Colborne, and the Dave's Single, made my way, scores a 7.1. That puts Wendy's at #82 out of 140 burgers on my rankings, ahead of plenty of independent spots.
My order
A Dave's Single with lettuce, onion and pickle only. The burger came to $5.97, plus a one-dollar charity donation they asked for at the counter. Service was quick. They asked my name, and in about a minute I heard "Joe, your order's ready."
The building is brand new, clean and bright inside, with a fresh parking lot to match. It came in a paper bag with no napkins. No problem.
What came out of the bag
A toasted, almost brioche-style bun, horizontal pickles, a light hand on the lettuce and a light hand on the white onion. The patty is four ounces, a quarter pounder, fresh and never frozen, as Wendy's likes to point out.
First bite
Everything about it was smooth and easy to eat. I could put this down in four bites, and the patty was good. I noticed this location has been getting some poor online reviews, and all I can say is haters gonna hate. As far as the burger goes, it's right up there among the fast-food burgers on the quest, and better than a lot of homemade burgers I've had. You don't sell millions of burgers a year by making bad ones.
The breakdown
- Bun: Good, toasted, almost like brioche.
- Patty: Fresh, never frozen, a quarter pound and pretty dense.
- Toppings: Good lettuce, light on the onion, and the pickles are legit.
- Service: Fast and friendly.
- Value: $5.97, a good price.
My verdict
Is it the best burger in Port Colborne? No. Is it the worst? Not a chance. The new Wendy's earns a solid 7.1, a burger I'd come back for, and a good excuse to finish the trip by getting Robyn a Frosty.
