McDonald's Burger Review – Fonthill, ON
It had to happen eventually. My Gold Medal Burger quest went to the golden arches, at the McDonald's on Highway 20 in Fonthill. The verdict: a 6.1, good for #109 out of 140 burgers on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.
I remember when McDonald's signs kept a running total of burgers sold, from millions up to billions. Now it was my turn to add one more.
My order
I ordered a Quarter Pounder with no cheese, lettuce, onion and pickle only, for $7.33. For the first time ever, McDonald's asked me to choose between leaf lettuce and shredded. I asked the staff what they would do, and the answer was shredded all the way. So shredded it was.
What came out of the box
A sesame seed bun, toasted, with slivered onions, pickles and just a little shredded lettuce. They went very light on the toppings. There was also a small dab of mustard that wasn't supposed to be there.
A McDonald's history lesson
Before the first bite, I had to tell Robyn: McDonald's was my first job ever, besides working on the farm. I was 16, wearing the pink shirt and black pants, and it's still one of my favourite jobs ever. It was like high school continued after the bell: a bunch of friends together, staying out of trouble and making money. Mostly out of trouble.
First bite
The burger was hot. I like that the Quarter Pounder uses slivered fresh onions instead of the dehydrated kind on the small hamburger. Those are actual real onions. The pickles were good.
- Bun: Toasted sesame seed bun, as expected.
- Patty: A standard Quarter Pounder patty. Nothing wrong with it.
- Toppings: Real slivered onion and good pickles, but light on everything.
- Value: Around seven bucks. Not a bad price.
Stripped down
Before the quest, the Big Mac was my go-to fast food burger, mostly for that sauce. The question here was what happens when you take a McDonald's burger and remove the ketchup, mustard and cheese. The answer: it's still good. I'd still eat a Quarter Pounder Gold Medal Burger style.
My verdict
A 6.1. Nobody expected McDonald's to blow anybody out of the water, and it didn't. It's no Big Mac. But it's still better than a lot of homemade burgers that get burnt to a crisp.
