Buried Treasure Café Burger Review – Niagara Falls, ON
Sometimes the quest turns up a place I've never even heard of. The Buried Treasure Café, a family dining spot at 8053 Portage Road in Niagara Falls, was one of those. I walked in cold and walked out with an 8.5 burger, good for #24 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.
Pirates and a picnic table
The name fits. Inside it's all pirates, sunken ships and treasure decor, and the guys working there were friendly. For once I even had a table to review on outside, which was a first for us. It was wintertime, so the setup was a little chilly, but they offered condiments on the side and gave me plenty of napkins.
My order
My usual Gold Medal Burger: a hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only, for $11.30. When I opened it up, I found what I think was the first pretzel bun of the entire quest, toasted, with a patty that looked homemade, vertically sliced pickle, red onion and greens that looked a lot like spinach in place of lettuce. I'm allowing it. Lettuce, spinach, it's greens for days. A healthy Gold Medal Burger.
First bite
The burger was hot, fresh out of the kitchen. One bite, everybody knows the rules, and the first thing out of my mouth was that I liked the bun. I kept coming back to it. That pretzel bun had a sweetness I had to show Robyn on camera, and it carried the burger. Legit happenings.
The pickle wasn't homemade, but it was a fair pickle and did its job. The whole thing was hot, flavourful and a lot better than I expected from a place I'd never heard of.
The breakdown
- Bun: A toasted pretzel bun, sweet and the star of the burger.
- Patty: Looked homemade and came out hot.
- Toppings: Red onion, a vertically sliced store-bought pickle and greens that may well have been spinach.
- Value: $11.30, fair for what you get.
Breakfast bonus
I asked what they're all about, and the answer was a lot of homemade food across breakfast, lunch and dinner. The deal that got my attention was a $5.99 breakfast special available every day. Why would anyone in Niagara Falls spend $40 a person on breakfast at a chain when you can come here for six bucks?
My verdict
The Buried Treasure Café lives up to its name. It's a hidden spot with a good burger, a sweet pretzel bun and prices that make sense. I gave it an 8.5, and we'll be back, maybe with a peg leg, for more burgers and that cheap breakfast.
