I didn't even know The Upper Deck TapHouse + Grill existed before this stop. It's at 210 Martindale Road in St. Catharines, and its Gold Medal Burger scored a 5.4, placing it #125 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.

My order

A hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only, which came to $15.81. I asked our server how the burger was. She said good. I asked if the patty was homemade. She said yes. I asked what the most popular thing was, and she said her favourite was the fish tacos. Make of that what you will.

Looking good

It came in a medium-sized package and looked promising. A nice, big, fresh-looking bun, a patty that looked homemade, leaf lettuce, a light touch of onion and a single vertically sliced pickle. That patty was steaming hot. One bite, everybody knows the rules.

First bite

Crunchy, with fresh, crisp onions. But the patty itself fell flat. I could taste the seasoning, the salt and the pepper, and it was salty and buttery, but the flavour just wasn't there. I even wondered out loud if I was coming down with something and my taste buds were off. Still, the more I ate, the more I landed in the same place: something was going on with that patty.

The pickle went the other way. I wasn't sure about it at first, but on its own it turned out to be pretty nice.

The breakdown

  • Bun: Fresh, big and good. It held up nicely.
  • Patty: Homemade and hot, but a flat flavour despite the salt and pepper.
  • Onion: Fresh and crunchy, though there wasn't much of it.
  • Pickle: One vertical slice that grew on me.
  • Value: $15.81, a bit high for what landed.

My verdict

You win some battles and you lose some battles. The bun was good, the pickle was nice and the onions were fresh, but the patty just wasn't doing it for me. Maybe it was my taste buds that day, I'll leave that door open, but the burger is a 5.4. The Upper Deck might be worth a visit for something else on the menu. Maybe try the fish tacos.
