I hadn't been to Fresco's in St. Catharines since high school, back when it was the place you went for pasta. It's a classy joint now, and the staff were very welcoming. The burger scores a 6.1, good for #113 out of 140 burgers on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.

A warm welcome

While I waited, I got shooting the breeze with a guy from the kitchen who wasn't even on duty. He went to check on my burger anyway. I also learned that Fresco's and Lino Linguini's have the same owner, so whichever one you go to, you're supporting the same people. I like it.

My order

A Gold Medal Burger with lettuce, onion and pickle only cost $15.81. It came in a pasta takeout container, which makes sense for a place that sends out a lot of pasta.

What's inside

A toasted bun, romaine, horizontally sliced pickles, red onion and a double patty, with some extra lettuce on the side. I hadn't had a double patty in a while and was curious how it would play.

First bite

It's not the most moist burger I've ever had, but it's got good flavour. The patties, probably two or three ounces each, were a little overcooked. There was one way to find out if a single would be better, so I pulled one patty off and tried it. It was.

  • Bun: Toasted and good.
  • Patty: Double, small patties with good flavour but slightly overcooked.
  • Toppings: Romaine, red onion and horizontal pickles. Good ingredients, but the pickle isn't my favourite.
  • Value: $15.81 is on the higher side. I'd happily pay the same for a single patty I could enjoy more.

The Vespa

Inside the restaurant sits a Vespa scooter that I couldn't stop talking about. I loved it, along with the solid, quality doors and the whole feel of the place. I could see myself riding around Wainfleet on that thing.

My verdict

A 6.1 for Fresco's. My notes are simple: go with a single patty and a different pickle, and the score goes up. The ingredients are good and the place is lovely. Robyn was keen on coming back for a date night, and I'll take her anytime.
