The Real McCoy on Lundy's Lane in Niagara Falls serves homemade burgers and pizza, and it sits right next to a Petro-Canada. I love the idea: fill up on gas and grab a homemade burger in one stop. The Gold Medal Burger scores a 6.8, landing at #92 out of 140 on my rankings.

My order

A hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only, for $8.46. That gets you a homemade eight-ounce charbroiled burger. The guys inside were nice, and the burger looked good on the grill. Robyn had never been either, and we were both a little surprised to find it beside a gas station.

First look

It had some weight to it and smelled good. A sesame seed bun, and not a small one. Shredded lettuce, vertically sliced pickles and diced onion on top of a big patty, hot off the grill. Big bun, big burger, eight bucks. I was already seeing good value.

One bite, everybody knows the rules

Not bad. The quest wasn't ending that day, but it was a decent burger. You get a lot of beef here. The pickles were mild, and the onion was diced.

I asked how often they make the patties, and I think the answer was about once a month. That matched what I tasted. It didn't taste old, like some places I've been, but it also didn't taste like it was made that day.

The convenience is a big part of the appeal. Picture it: I pull in to fill the tank, I'm hungry, and I walk out with an eight-ounce homemade burger for less than ten bucks. For a quick stop on Lundy's Lane, that's hard to beat, even if this patty won't end the quest.

The breakdown

  • Bun: Big sesame seed bun.
  • Patty: Homemade, eight ounces and charbroiled, though not freshly made.
  • Toppings: Shredded lettuce, diced onion and mild vertical pickles.
  • Value: $8.46 for eight ounces of beef is strong value.

My verdict

Niagara Falls has a few spots with good value, and The Real McCoy is one of them. At 6.8, there's nothing wrong with this burger, especially for eight bucks. I want to come back and try the pizza, and I spotted a deal where filling up on gas gets you a free burger. With that offer, I'd be here every day.
