Bugsy's Burger Review – St. Catharines, ON
Bugsy's in St. Catharines was busy when Robyn and I stopped in, with the kitchen pumping out pizzas, burgers, chicken fingers and fries. The Gold Medal Burger didn't keep up. It scored a 4.2, landing at #134 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.
My order
A hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only, for $12.38. My voice was a little rough that day, but the quest goes on. Looking around, I could see people eating all kinds of things, which I took as a good sign for the kitchen.
Bugsy's sits right next door to one of my favourite local cannabis shops, and I'll pitch the combo as a pretty good day out: stop next door, then come over for a burger and a beer.
What's on it
Vertically sliced pickles, a white onion ring and iceberg lettuce. Not a small burger, with a big bun and a big patty, but it didn't look homemade.
A guest bite
A guy walked by while we were filming, so I asked if he'd had the burger here. He had, and said it was very good. So I recruited him to help me review it. My own take on the first bite: lots of crunch from the lettuce, a pickle that wasn't bad, but not a homemade patty. I'd seen the wings coming out, and they looked really good.
The breakdown
- Bun: Big.
- Patty: Big, but not homemade.
- Lettuce: Iceberg with plenty of crunch.
- Pickles: Vertically sliced and not bad.
- Onion: A white onion ring.
- Value: $12.38 gets you a lot of burger by size.
My verdict
The people were really nice, and Bugsy's is clearly doing something right given how much food was going out. But my read is that the burger isn't their number one seller. It's big and crunchy, but it's not the best burger on the quest, and it's not homemade. It's a 4.2. If you're at Bugsy's, follow the crowd and order something else.
