Brux House Craft Beer & Kitchen Burger Review – Hamilton, ON
Robyn and I took the quest to Steel City for a stop at Brux House Craft Beer & Kitchen in Hamilton. The burger looked like one of the best of the whole quest. It also had tomato on it, and that made it a disqualification. Brux House goes down as a DQ.
The spot
Brux House is a chill, laid-back place. There were people inside, plenty of staff working, music on but not too crazy, and a big lineup of craft beers. It looked like a good spot to hang out, and I was hopeful.
My order and the price
Same order as every stop: a hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only. The bill came to $21.47, and I can't get over what a wide range of burger prices I'm finding out here in the Hammer. The packaging was interesting too, and I liked it.
Opening the box
My first reaction: this burger looks phenomenal. It was sitting on what looked like a toasted brioche bun, and everything was looking great until I got to the tomato. I've made exceptions in the past, but if a place doesn't serve a Gold Medal Burger as a Gold Medal Burger, it's a DQ.
- Bun: Toasted brioche.
- Patty: Thick, and I was impressed by the look of it.
- Toppings: Caramelized onions and horizontally sliced pickles, plus the tomato that sank it.
- Value: $21.47, at the upper end of the quest.
Because it looked so good, I still had to try it, and I went back for one more bite to make sure I got some onion and pickle in there. But let me be clear: there would be no score given other than a DQ.
My verdict
This one broke my heart. Brux House had everything going for them: the bun, the caramelized onions, the pickles and a thick patty. Handing out DQs is the hardest part of the job, but the rules are the rules. Brux House Craft Beer & Kitchen in Hamilton is disqualified on my Gold Medal Burger quest, and I left wishing it had gone the other way.
