Still in Steeltown, Robyn and I stopped at The Burger's Priest at 1591 Upper James Street in Hamilton. I had eaten here once before the quest ever started and remembered a wonderful burger, so I was a little excited. It lived up to the memory: The Burger's Priest scores an 8.1, #47 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.

My order

The Gold Medal Burger, lettuce, onion and pickle only, cost $6.77. What a range Hamilton served up that day, from one burger under five dollars to another north of twenty. This one came in a paper bag with lots of serviettes.

A pocket burger

A nice little burger: soft bun, a couple of pieces of lettuce, white onion and a couple of pickle slices. I could probably eat about ten of them. Hamilton hadn't been feeding me well that day, and I was hungry.

First bite

Bam. We found ourselves a burger. Soft, fresh bun, juicy patty, and the white onion, something I hadn't had in a while, was a nice change. And no, it wasn't just the hunger talking: I can't remember having a better chain burger.

  • Bun: Soft and fresh.
  • Patty: Juicy and going down like butter, without a fast food taste.
  • Toppings: Lettuce, white onion and pickle slices, simple and balanced.
  • Size: Small, and I liked that. Easy to eat a few.
  • Value: $6.77 for a quality quick service burger.

Better than the big chains

I'd call this quick service, not fast food, and it blows the big chains out of the water. Grab a few on the way to the movies. Robyn agreed with my score, too.

Redeeming the burger

The Burger's Priest likes to say it redeems the burger one at a time, and on a hungry day in Hamilton it did exactly that for me. The stripped down version let the beef do the talking, and I can easily see myself coming back for more.

My verdict

An easy 8.1. Last time I got everything on the burger, but with a patty this good, you don't need to dress it up. Strip it down to lettuce, onion and pickle and it still shines.
