Robyn picked this one. She pointed the car at Hamilton and brought me to Hutch's on the Beach, a place I had never even heard of. It turned out to have the cheapest burger on my Gold Medal Burger quest so far, and it also turned out to be a DQ: tomato on, onion missing.

The spot

Hutch's is a diner-style place near Van Wagner's Beach Road with murals, a line of people waiting and a view of Lake Ontario. I counted 20 or 30 booths, maybe more, and Robyn noted it had over 2,000 Google reviews with a 4.4 rating. They even have outdoor speakers. I loved the vibe.

The order and the price

Robyn ordered the usual: a hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only. The total was $4.80 with tax, a new record for the least expensive burger on the quest. It came schoolyard style in a paper bag, wrapped in foil, like a little pocket burger.

The unwrap

Then came the surprise: lettuce, tomato and pickle, with no onion. Talk about irony. The most expensive burger on the quest, at Outback Steakhouse in Niagara Falls, was a DQ, and now the cheapest one was a DQ too.

Robyn takes a bite

Since it smelled good and we had come all this way, Robyn did a review of her own. Her notes:

  • Bun: Looked toasted, and it was nice.
  • Patty: Fast food style, not too juicy, and it reminded her of a Wendy's burger.
  • Seasoning: Under-seasoned, not very salty.
  • Toppings: The tomato was pretty good for being out of season, and the pickles might have been homemade.
  • Value: $4.80, unbeatable on price.

Robyn would have given it a 5.3, and she said she would definitely come back for the atmosphere and the lake view. But I had to remind her that a DQ burger doesn't get a score.

My verdict

Hutch's on the Beach is a great spot with a great view, and I was looking forward to making happenings there. But with tomato on and no onion, it's a DQ. On the bright side, Robyn finally got to do a review, so I'm counting that as a win.
