The Black Sheep Lounge: How a Gold Medal Burger Review Boosted Sales
I headed back to The Black Sheep Lounge in Welland, one of my favorite places, for a follow-up on a Gold Medal Burger review that went very well. When I reviewed the burger there, it was a standout, the best Gold Medal Burger I had found in Welland. This time I wanted to hear from owner Lucas Spinosa about what happened afterward.
The burger became the bestseller
Lucas thanked me and all the fans for the feedback from the review. The Black Sheep took what people loved about the burger and made a few tweaks to make it even better, and he invited everyone to come in and judge for themselves.
They have been selling the Gold Medal Burger since September, and in October Lucas pulled up the numbers from the restaurant's POS system. The Gold Medal Burger was the top-selling item. By dollar amount, it beat coffee and lattes, in a coffee shop. It beat every other food item at breakfast and lunch, and it even beat their bags of coffee.
A tip for other restaurants
Lucas had advice for burger makers: if I've come in and reviewed your burger, promote it. At The Black Sheep, it's their number one item.
I had heard rumblings that the burger was doing well, and I was thrilled to see it confirmed. Credit to The Black Sheep for putting out a spectacular Gold Medal Burger, like everything else they make. While I was there, I had a Reuben and a cabbage soup, and both were delicious.
Making the most of a review
This ties right into another Welland spot. I had recently seen Blue Star, where the burger review didn't go well, use it as an opportunity to put the spotlight on themselves. Whether a review is good or bad, the restaurants that lean into it are the ones that come out ahead.
The Black Sheep is the proof. A strong Gold Medal Burger, a few improvements and some promotion turned a single menu item into the restaurant's top seller. The quest continues.
