My Gold Medal Burger quest went international! Robyn and I travelled down to Willemstad, Curaçao, nearly to the equator, and grabbed a burger at Dock Bar & Kitchen, then carried it across the street to eat by the water at sunset. It scores a 5.9, good for #115 out of 140 burgers on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.

My order

Lettuce, onion and pickle only, at $12.36 on my scoresheet. Paying in a mix of currencies on vacation left me a little confused about the change, but the burger itself came with a first. For the first time on the quest, the staff brought the burger out and checked it with me before handing it over, to make sure it was right. That took some of the surprise out of opening the box, but I give them big credit for it.

We'd already eaten a couple of burgers on the island, but this was my first official Gold Medal Burger in Curaçao.

A first look

Oh my goodness, it was dripping. It had cooked onions, a patty, pickles cut into small pieces and lettuce on a bun. Behind me were boats, a cruise ship, the water and a bridge. Not a bad view.

First bite

The patty was cooked well and very juicy. The beef on the island had been good so far, but this one tasted different from the others, and at first I couldn't tell whether it was the pickle or the meat. It turned out to be a bit of both.

  • Onions: Cooked in butter and dynamite. The best part of the whole burger, and maybe the first time onions have taken that title on the quest.
  • Pickles: Not my style. They reminded me of the little gherkins you get as a garnish.
  • Patty: Juicy and cooked through, but not my favourite kind of beef. The other burgers on the island were more flavourful.
  • Bun: Soaked up the juice and paired well with the onions.

Juice, onions and bread

I could eat that combination of burger juice, buttery cooked onions and bread all day. It almost hurts that my first official Gold Medal Burger of the trip didn't score higher. It's not terrible, and it's not even bad. It's just different.

My verdict

A 5.9 for Dock Bar & Kitchen. The onions were great, the burger was juicy and the service went above and beyond by double checking the order. The pickles and the beef held it back. Not a bad way to watch the sun go down in Curaçao, though.
