The Gold Medal Burger quest went international as Robyn and I landed in Curaçao for the first time ever. Our first stop was Restaurant & Café Gouverneur De Rouville in Willemstad, overlooking colorful waterfront buildings that look almost like Amsterdam. The burger was good. It also came with sauce, so it was disqualified.

My order

I ordered my usual: a hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only. The kitchen was technically closed, but a super nice server snuck the order in anyway, without even knowing it was for a review. Even better, they asked how I wanted it cooked. Medium rare, please, a rare treat on the quest.

The price was 25.75 in local currency, which worked out to $14.71 US, or about $19.56 Canadian. The burger came out in ten or twelve minutes in a fancy bag and what looked like a recyclable container. No napkins, though.

First bite on the island

Inside I found a big bun, a grilled patty, lettuce, onion and vertically sliced pickles. It looked like a homemade, backyard style burger. The bun was crunchy rather than toasted. One bite, everybody knows the rules, and right away I tasted mustard. They sauced it.

  • Bun: Big and crunchy.
  • Patty: Grilled and meaty, cooked medium rare as requested.
  • Toppings: Lettuce, onion and a nice sweet pickle, plus the sauce that sank it.
  • Value: Not cheap, but the service was quick and friendly.

Vacation Joe vs. the rules

Robyn pointed out that this was vacation Joe. Didn't matter. No matter where in the world the quest goes, a Gold Medal Burger is lettuce, onion and pickle only. I'll admit the sauce was good, and that's part of the problem: it was enhancing a burger that shouldn't need it.

Off the record, if it weren't for the sauce, this would easily have been an 8.1. Not the best burger I've ever had, but a legit, really nice burger.

My verdict

Gouverneur De Rouville is a DQ, but I can't blame them. Nobody in Curaçao knows the burger man yet. Good service, a beautiful view and a solid burger gave me real hope for the rest of the quest on the island.
