This stop came from an unusual source: the Hamilton police. On an earlier Hamilton trip, Robyn and I got pulled over (no ticket), and when I explained the quest, the officer told me the best burger around was at Memphis Fire Barbecue Company in Winona. So we made the drive. The Gold Medal Burger scores a 6.7, landing at #99 out of 140 on my rankings.

My order

A hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only, for $13.56. Still reasonable, though a little more than the average Niagara price. It came in a plastic bag loaded with napkins and a wet-nap. I noticed the menu listing for their classic mentions tomato, but I stuck to the rules.

First look

I liked what I saw when I opened it up. Thinly sliced red onions, lots of pickles, chopped romaine lettuce and a homemade patty all day long, on a lightly toasted bun.

One bite, everybody knows the rules

Good, but not best burger good. There's no way that officer ordered his like this; he must have had more on it. The biggest issue was the lettuce. There was so much of it that it was almost a Gold Medal Burger salad. Under all those veggies, the patty wasn't juicy enough and was a little light on the seasoning. It didn't taste bad, it just didn't taste like beef that had been ground that day.

One thicker piece of the patty did taste fresher and better than the rest, which left me wondering what was going on with it.

The breakdown

  • Bun: Lightly toasted, a nice bun.
  • Patty: Homemade, but not juicy and light on seasoning.
  • Toppings: Way too much lettuce, thin red onion and plenty of pickles.
  • Value: $13.56, a bit above average.

My verdict

I had high hopes for this one, and thank you to the Hamilton police for the tip, but Memphis Fire Barbecue Company lands at 6.7. There's a fresh produce farm right next door, so we'll grab something for the road. And I want to hear from you: send me more mom-and-pop burger spots around Hamilton, because a lot of the places I've tried out that way have been chains.
