Walter's & Neptunes sits at the corner of Clarence and West Street in Port Colborne, right across from the Welland Canal, and it holds a special place in my heart. The Gold Medal Burger here scores a 6.8, good for #91 out of 140 on my rankings.

A piece of Must See Monday history

Most people don't know this, maybe not even Robyn. Back when I filmed the pilot episode of Must See Monday, I walked right past Walter's, thought about going in, and kept going to film around the corner instead. This time, I finally went in to eat.

My order

A hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only, for a very affordable $6.72 with tax, in a paper bag. I've been to Walter's a handful of times for Greek food like saganaki and Greek salad, and the food is very good, but I'd never had a burger here and didn't know what to expect.

It's not very big, but that doesn't mean it's not good. A regular toasted bun, lettuce, white onion and quite a bit of pickle on a patty that looked nicely seasoned.

A visitor from The Lock

Before the bite, one of the guys from The Lock, maybe my favourite pizza place in the world, walked by and said hi. I could never have started my pizza reviews there. It probably would have scored a 10 and the quest would have been over.

One bite, everybody knows the rules

Not bad. The onions were good and the flavour was really good. It's not the juiciest burger I've had in my life, but it was well seasoned. My developing burger palate says this isn't a backyard patty, though I could be wrong. The pickle, once I finally hit it, complemented the burger really well.

The breakdown

  • Bun: A regular toasted bun.
  • Patty: On the small side and not the juiciest, but nicely seasoned.
  • Toppings: White onion, lettuce and plenty of pickle.
  • Value: $6.72 with tax, very affordable.

My verdict

A good, solid Port Colborne burger. Walter's & Neptunes earns a 6.8, and it keeps its spot in my own little piece of history.
