Wainfleet might be my favourite place in the whole world, and the 2 x 4 Diner, established in 1957, is a local landmark. I actually sold the property myself, so congratulations to the owners. The Gold Medal Burger scored a 7.2, #78 out of 140 burgers on my rankings, and one missing ingredient made all the difference.

The diner sits at the corner of Regional Roads 24 and 27, which if you ask me should be called 2 x 4 Corners.

My order

It was Friday, the diner was busy with the fish fry crowd, and the fish and chips looked great. But the quest comes first. Robyn went in incognito to order the Gold Medal Burger, lettuce, onion and pickle only, for $8.98.

Out came a toasted bun, lettuce, lots of julienne style pickles, a homemade patty and coleslaw on the side. And no onion. I asked Robyn if she ordered the onion. She said yes. Then she admitted she was busy on the phone.

First bite

One bite, everybody knows the rules. The burger was good and juicy, the lettuce was good, the abundance of pickle was great and the patty had good flavour. But all I could think about was the missing onion. It was raining a little, which doesn't matter in Wainfleet.

What came on the plate

  • Bun: Toasted.
  • Patty: Homemade with good flavour. No backyard burgers here.
  • Pickles: Julienne style and plentiful. I loved them.
  • Onion: None.
  • Extras: Coleslaw on the side, not worth a deduction.
  • Value: $8.98, about nine bucks.

Robyn shook her head through most of the onion debate. I kept circling back: the patty is homemade, the pickles are great and the price is right, but a Gold Medal Burger needs its onion.

My verdict

I wasn't going to disqualify the 2 x 4 Diner for a missing onion, but without one I'm not sure it even counts as a Gold Medal Burger, so points had to come off. I love the breakfasts, the lunches and the fish and chips, which might be my favourite anywhere. The burger itself is good with a nice homemade patty, and it lands at 7.2.
