Every quest has a first, and this was one I didn't want. Mr. Mikes SteakhouseCasual in Welland, in the Seaway Mall parking lot at Niagara Street and Woodlawn Road, earned the very first disqualification on my Gold Medal Burger quest. The reason: cheese.
The setup
I had been to Mr. Mikes before for a couple of drinks and appetizers, but I had never tried a steak or a hamburger there. From what I understand, it's a franchise that started out west, and I was curious to see what the beef was all about.
The price was $13.55, not cheap. Robyn ordered the Gold Medal Burger exactly as always: a hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only. I was standing right there and heard her order it. There was no screw-up on our side.
The reveal
The burger came out with cheese on it. I didn't take a bite. This isn't a silver medal burger or a bronze medal burger, it's a DQ burger. You can't take cheese off, so there was no way to save it.

- Order: Hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only.
- What came out: A cheeseburger.
- Bonus: Fries on the side, which we didn't order but weren't charged for either. I didn't hold the fries against them.
Robyn pushes back
Robyn was upset about the DQ and asked if I could just dock some marks instead. My answer: a disqualification is not a zero, it's a disqualification. I have sleepless nights worrying about giving anyone bad press, and I want to be fair to everybody. But part of the quest is that if a place makes the burger wrong, that's on them, not on the person ordering. I'm not handing out participation ribbons.
It hurt even more because the staff were friendly. I chatted with a great server at the bar who knew all about Joe the burger man and his reviews.
My verdict
Mr. Mikes in Welland goes into the record books as DQ number one. No score, no ranking. The rules were set from day one, and if you order a hamburger and get a cheeseburger, it's a DQ.
