Anybody who's been around Welland knows For Pizza's Sake, at the corner of Broadway and Clifford. The sign out front claims the best steak sub in town, and I'll tell you, that's a close call with another Welland favourite. I've had them both and I love them both. But today was about burgers, and the burger here scores an 8.1, #49 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.

No permission needed

A while back I asked the owner, a witty guy who's there every time I visit, about doing a Must See Monday. His answer: no thank you, we're busy enough. Looking at the full parking lot, he wasn't joking. But the Gold Medal Burger quest is unplanned, unscripted and unedited, so I don't ask anybody's permission.

My order

I got my usual lettuce, onion and pickle only burger for $9.04, and I watched them make it. The owner told me it's a homemade patty made just like his mama used to make, a simple recipe with no fillers. By the time it got to me, the juices were pooling on top of the patty. My mouth was watering.

First bite

One bite, everybody knows the rules. It's a heavy burger and a little sloppy, but dripping and juicy. I couldn't take marks off for the Must See Monday snub, and I didn't need to. Cooked well and seasoned well.

Burger breakdown

  • Bun: Toasted sesame seed bun.
  • Patty: Homemade, no fillers, juicy and well seasoned.
  • Toppings: Thinly sliced red onion and a good amount of iceberg lettuce. The pickles were really sour and not my favourite.
  • Value: $9.04 for a big homemade burger.

No rookie scores

This burger was nowhere near the sixes. My gut said 8.0, but round numbers are rookie scores, and I avoid those at all costs. I'll also admit I still prefer the steak sub, which I rank among the best anywhere.

A long day of burgers

This was one of many stops on a big day of filming, and I joked that I might go soft on the scores with so many burgers still to come. I didn't. Nobody had recommended this one to me either, which made it even more of a pleasant surprise for a pizza place.

My verdict

An 8.1 for a very good pizza shop hamburger. Juicy, homemade and generous, with only the sour pickles holding it back. Come for the steak sub, but the burger at For Pizza's Sake is worth ordering too.
