By popular request, Robyn and I headed to Ye Olde Squire at the Seaway Mall in Welland, near the corner of Niagara Street and Woodlawn Road. You burger fans had been telling me to try it, and after one bite I understood why. Ye Olde Squire scores an 8.2, #43 out of 140 burgers on my Gold Medal Burger quest.

My order

The receipt said it right there: homemade burger. The Gold Medal Burger, lettuce, onion and pickle only, came to $13.56. It came in a plastic bag, which I promise went home with me to the recycling bin, along with a fork and knife.

What came out of the bag

One piece of what looked like romaine lettuce, a single slice of pickle, and onions that turned out to be pickled. I love pickled onions. The bun wasn't toasted and looked like brioche.

First bite

One bite, everybody knows the rules. Juice was dripping, and I knew right away this was a good burger. The pickled onions were a first on the quest and a very nice touch, adding crunch and a little sourness.

On the drive over, I had been telling Robyn I was trying to work out what went wrong with the last burger. I finally figured it out: way too much bun. Ye Olde Squire got that part right.

My breakdown

  • Bun: Brioche style, not toasted, and I liked it a lot.
  • Patty: Homemade, meaty and juicy without swimming in juice.
  • Toppings: Pickled onions were the highlight. A little light on pickle and lettuce, but not enough to lose marks.
  • Ratio: Very good bun to burger ratio.
  • Value: At nearly $14 it's not a steal, but it's not bad value either. It fills you up.

A fancy burger

Brioche bun plus pickled onions? That's a fancy burger. If I finished the whole thing I wouldn't be able to eat another burger that day, but I still wanted to keep eating it.

My verdict

A very good 8.2 burger at the mall. Come to the Seaway Mall, buy some clothes, grab a burger and a drink at the pub, or catch a movie. My suggestion: grab a couple of these before the show.
