Wainfleet is my favourite place in the entire world, so a stop at the Wainfleet Restaurant was a homecoming. It sits at the corner of Highway 3 and Forks Road, just up from Chambers Corners. The Gold Medal Burger scores a 6.7, good for #98 out of 140 on my rankings.

A near catastrophe

Robyn ordered ahead to keep us incognito: a hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only. The answer came back that they had no pickles. A Gold Medal Burger without pickles is not a Gold Medal Burger. Then I walked in, a staff member recognized me, and she said she couldn't let that burger go out without pickles. They went looking and found some. Nice recovery.

My order

The burger came to $9.59. Inside: a lightly toasted sesame seed bun, slivered red onions, lettuce, and what looked like a sweet pickle, the one that saved the day, on a patty I pegged as backyard right away.

One bite, everybody knows the rules

It was good. My developing burger palate confirmed the backyard patty, but it was cooked well and it was juicy, and juicy is always good. I've eaten at the Wainfleet Restaurant dozens of times, maybe hundreds. I love the food, the chef is a great guy, and they've got great people working there.

The pickle story says a lot about the place. Robyn tried to keep the order low key, and the kitchen's first answer could have sunk the review before it started. Instead, the staff went looking, found pickles and sent out the burger the right way. If you recognize the burger man and get the pickles on, you're off on the right foot.

The breakdown

  • Bun: Lightly toasted sesame seed.
  • Patty: Backyard, but cooked well and juicy.
  • Toppings: Slivered red onion, lettuce and a sweet pickle that almost didn't make it.
  • Service: A staff member who went looking for pickles once she saw who it was for.
  • Value: $9.59.

My verdict

The Wainfleet Restaurant made the pickle happen and served a juicy backyard burger, good for a 6.7. The burger isn't going to win the quest, but my love for the place and the people isn't going anywhere.
