Archie's Subs and Eatery Burger Review – Port Colborne, ON
Earlier in the day, while I was filming a burger review in Wainfleet, somebody told me I had to go to Archie's. So on a rainy afternoon, Robyn and I headed to Archie's Subs and Eatery at the corner of Clarence and Catharine in Port Colborne. The burger scores a 7.8, #57 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.
My order
Lettuce, onion and pickle only, for $6.16. Because of the rain, it came double bagged, a plastic bag protecting the paper bag, with the burger wrapped in tin foil. I'd heard good things about both the subs and the burgers here, and I'm hoping to do a Must See Monday one day with Laurie, the owner.
First look
A big bun, juice on the wrapper, shredded lettuce, pickles and onions. I suspected a homemade patty, and there was only one way to find out.
First bite
One bite, everybody knows the rules. Hot. Very hot. The hottest hamburger of the quest, and it burned my tongue. Nobody can say this burger sat around waiting. The bun was very lightly toasted, if at all, and fresh.
- Bun: Big, fresh and very lightly toasted.
- Patty: Big, really meaty, no filler. The more I ate, the more I enjoyed it.
- Toppings: Shredded lettuce, onion and dill pickles with a little bite.
- Value: $6.16 for a burger this size is pretty good value.
Land of the sevens
A good all around, solid burger. Not in the sixes, not in the eights. Firmly in the land of the sevens. Friendly people in Port Colborne, too.
Right across from Wendy's
Archie's sits right across the street from a brand new Wendy's. Will the quest ever stop at a Wendy's? Maybe one day, but that day the local spot got the review, and Archie's held up its end with a big, hot, homemade burger.
My verdict
A 7.8 at Archie's. Hot, big, meaty and cheap, on a fresh bun. You can come here any time and get a good burger for about six bucks, and I want to come back for a sub.
