Everybody I've ever talked to about Touchdown Willy's in Smithville tells me about the wings. The staff told me they go through a thousand pounds of them a week, and I don't doubt it. This time, though, I was there for the Gold Medal Burger, and it scored a 7.7, #62 out of 140 burgers on my rankings.

Touchdown Willy's sits right in the heart of Smithville next to a Tim Hortons. It's a sports bar with friendly owners and staff, and I'd been in a couple of times before.

No special treatment

They recognized me when I walked in, so I made it clear I didn't want anything special. I wanted the everyday burger everybody else gets. They told me not to worry, that's exactly what I was getting. The price was $11.30.

They got the order right: lettuce, onion and pickle only. The patty was homemade with a bit of char and some juices you could see, sitting on a nicely toasted sesame seed bun, a grocery store style bun.

First bite

It smelled good. One bite, everybody knows the rules. The burger chewed up nice and soft and wasn't overcooked. I think there are some breadcrumbs in the mix, which explains the softness and makes it nice and easy to chew. I prefer straight beef, no need for breadcrumbs or eggs, but I get it, a patty going on a grill has to hold together.

I can picture the perfect Smithville night: you're working afternoons, you hang with the boys, grab some beers and wings and catch the game. This burger fits right into that.

The breakdown

  • Bun: Toasted sesame seed bun.
  • Patty: Homemade, soft and not overcooked, with what tasted like breadcrumbs in the mix.
  • Toppings: Lettuce, onion and pickle, prepped nicely.
  • Value: $11.30, a good price for a sit-down sports bar burger.

My verdict

A good, solid grill burger that suits a sports bar perfectly. Good burger, good price, good people. I scored it a 7.7, Ray Bourque. And I'm coming back for the wings: jumbo, breaded or not, in about 30 flavours, enough that Robyn would need dozens of visits to try them all.
