My grade school buddy Lucas had been telling me since the quest began that I had to try the burger at Smithville Pizzeria. I finally made the trip, and the Gold Medal Burger scored a 3.9, placing it #137 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.

My order

A hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only, for a very friendly $5.64. I liked the brown bag packaging, which took me back to brown-bagging lunch at school with Lucas. The staff were upfront: they told me it's a backyard burger, but a real one, not like a fast food patty.

What's a backyard burger?

For anyone new to the quest, here's what I mean. A backyard burger is a frozen, pre-made patty you buy by the case, put in the freezer, and grill all summer long. Not made by you.

What came out

I liked this sesame seed bun better than some I'd seen recently. The presentation was nice and neat: a couple of vertical pickle slices, white onion rings, a folded piece of lettuce and a toasted bun. And there it was, a backyard bear claw patty. One bite, everybody knows the rules.

The breakdown

  • Bun: Toasted sesame seed, better than some.
  • Patty: Backyard bear claw, frozen and pre-made.
  • Toppings: Vertical pickle slices, white onion rings and lettuce.
  • Presentation: Tidy and well put together.
  • Value: $5.64, hard to go wrong on price.

Friendly folks

The staff get an A-plus. Super nice on the phone, efficient taking the order and nice with Robyn, and Robyn said the place was cute the moment she walked in. I suggested a homemade patty would step the burger up, but it sounded like they'd rather keep it cheap. If people buy it, that's what works, and the price is good.

My verdict

It's painful for me to give low scores, especially to people this friendly. But the Gold Medal Burger is a backyard patty, and it's a 3.9. Smithville Pizzeria is a pizza place, not a burger place, and if we lived in Smithville, I figure we'd be coming here for the pizza. That's what I'm trying next time. Lucas, thanks for the tip, but I've got some burgers to show you.
