After a detour into pizza, I was back on the Gold Medal Burger quest at Burger Cafe & Beyond, a little spot in a busy plaza in St. Catharines. I have no idea what the "beyond" is, but burger is in the name, so we had to try it. It scores a 7.1, good for #84 out of 140 burgers.

My order

The usual: a hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only. The price jumped out right away at $6.65. They told me it would take six minutes, and six minutes later, my six-dollar burger was ready. Quick, efficient and friendly.

I caught a nice detail at the counter. The burger was made on a flat-top grill and wrapped, and then she gave it a couple of extra folds to make sure it was tight before it went into the paper bag. Then I went and messed up all her work opening it on camera.

First bite

Inside: a bun, a little bit of lettuce, onion and horizontally sliced pickles underneath. My first instinct was backyard patty, but after the bite I wasn't so sure, because it didn't taste like one. It reminded me of another small-town burger I had in Dunnville, with a slightly different kind of meat texture. I liked it.

These days I'm trying to eat no more than half a burger per stop, so I had to make every bite count. I still found myself flirting with the halfway line.

Bun, patty and toppings

  • Bun: Plain and soft, doing its job.
  • Patty: Cooked on the flat-top. Not quite backyard, not quite homemade, and good for the price.
  • Onions: Crunchy and fresh.
  • Pickles: Sweet pickles that complement the burger nicely.
  • Value: $6.65, one of the better prices on the quest.

The neighbourhood

The plaza is packed with options, from a burger house and a Chinese restaurant to a nail bar, with a Tim Hortons across the street. Burger Cafe & Beyond is a small spot, but it holds its own.

My verdict

What's the beyond? The score is beyond a six. It lands at 7.1, a very respectable number for a $6.65 burger served by friendly people in six minutes. It was a nice way to come back to burgers after the pizza detour, and if you're in St. Catharines and want a cheap, quick Gold Medal Burger, this is a solid pick.
