I'd never even heard of MJ's Own Munchies on Lakeshore in St. Catharines until my buddy Mike recommended it. It turned out to be one of the best values on my Gold Medal Burger quest. MJ's scored a 7.5, #67 out of 140 burgers on my rankings, for a burger that cost just $5.11.

A cool little spot

The sign on the door says push hard, and they are not kidding. Inside, the walls are covered in license plates, and the oldest one I spotted dates back to 1916. Bring in a plate to donate and you get free fries, as long as it's not from Ontario, because they've got plenty of those already. The staff were friendly, the place is open all year, and the menu has deep fried treats like Mars bars, Oreos and even a deep fried Twinkie.

My order

Lettuce, onion and pickle only, for $5.11. I can't figure out how they make money at that price. It came in a little paper bag with a napkin, and inside was a small round bun, shredded lettuce, a bunch of pickles, cooked onions and a thick little "baseball" style homemade patty.

First bite

It smelled good. One bite, everybody knows the rules. I liked it right away, and the cooked onions were a nice touch. The pickles were dill, probably not homemade, but with a good pop. My one knock was seasoning. The patty was a little light on salt, but hey, I'm watching my sodium anyway.

I'm also starting to realize shredded lettuce is not my favourite, although sometimes it works, and here it was good.

The breakdown

  • Bun: A good, small round bun that suits the thick patty.
  • Patty: Homemade baseball patty, tasty but under-seasoned.
  • Toppings: Cooked onions, shredded lettuce and plenty of dill pickles.
  • Value: $5.11, one of the cheapest burgers on the quest.

My verdict

MJ's Own Munchies gets a 7.5. With a bit more seasoning it would climb, but the value is unreal. You could get four burgers here for the price of one at some places, and it's better than a lot of them. I want to come back, and that deep fried Twinkie might be calling my name.
