I had never even heard of Manhattans Bar and Grill in St. Catharines before the Gold Medal Burger quest took me there. Fish and chips, steak subs, wings and burgers are on the menu, and so was the friendliest service of the quest so far. The burger scores an 8.1, #50 out of 140 on my rankings.
My order
My usual: a hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only. Manhattans knocked a dollar off, bringing it to $12.55. Off to a good start. The server was sweet and smiling, and the man taking the order double-checked it a few times to make sure it was right.
A free surprise
The bag felt heavy. Inside were fries I hadn't ordered or paid for. Robyn had wanted fries that day and I told her no, but sometimes you put it out into the universe and you get it anyway. I've been on a health journey and hadn't had a fry in a while.
First bite
A homemade patty on a toasted brioche bun, with very thin rings of red onion and pieces of iceberg lettuce. This wasn't the first review of the day, and I was starting to feel like I'd eaten enough burgers. One bite changed my mind. Soft, fluffy and melting in my mouth.
How I broke it down
- Bun: A soft, toasted brioche bun.
- Patty: Homemade and fluffy, almost reminding me of one of my favourite homemade burgers.
- Pickles: Not homemade, but nice and mellow, never too pungent.
- Onion: Thin red onion that I liked, though I wanted more of it.
- Value: $12.55 with a free side of fries. Good prices across the menu.
Never heard of it
Lately the quest keeps taking me to places I've never heard of, and Manhattans is one of the better finds. Robyn was styling in her sunglasses for this one, and I kept calling her gangster Robyn the whole visit.
My verdict
Manhattans came to play. They're not just friendly and generous, they make a good burger, and it earns an 8.1. I'd come back and try anything on the menu, maybe the roast beef dinner. Just don't go expecting free sides everywhere, because the last thing anybody wants is Manhattans going out of business.
