Country Chip Wagon Burger Review – Dunnville, ON
It had been a long time between Gold Medal Burgers when Robyn and I pulled into Country Chip Wagon on the far west side of Dunnville, out toward Cayuga, fresh off a tennis match (I won 3-2, for the record). The chip wagon had reached out a few times to invite me, and the burger scores a 6.9, good for #89 out of 140 on my rankings.
The setting
A sunny day, picnic tables and a whole tray of food. The tables were spaced out and wiped down. A sign by the window reads "quality food, not fast food, so be patient," and the wait was only about ten minutes. The people working there were super friendly.
My order
A hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only, for $7.76. They asked if I wanted to dress it up into their fancier burger, but I kept it simple. I've got to see if the burger is good on its own.
First bite in months
A sesame seed bun, lettuce, pickles and diced onions on the bottom. I pegged the patty as backyard before the first bite, and the bite confirmed it. But the first thing I noticed was the bun: fresh, not cold, and good. The pickles were the standout, vertically sliced, nice and sour, and evenly distributed. I loved them so much I could have gone for one more.
The patty was cooked well and still had some juice. It didn't taste like it had been sitting in a freezer for a long time.
The breakdown
- Bun: Fresh sesame seed bun.
- Patty: Backyard, but cooked well, and solid for what it is.
- Pickles: Vertical, sour and the best part of the burger.
- Onions and lettuce: Diced onions and a healthy amount of lettuce.
- Value: $7.76 at a friendly roadside stand.
My verdict
I'll be upfront: the friendly service and the invitation don't change the number. It's a good backyard burger, but it's still a backyard burger, so it lands at 6.9. If you're on the west side of Dunnville on a nice day, a picnic table at Country Chip Wagon is a pleasant place to eat one.
