Garrisons Grill sits at the Five Corners in Niagara Falls, where Thorold Stone Road, Portage Road and Drummond Road meet. My good buddy Mike from DJ's Roadhouse, home of another great burger on the quest, tipped me off the night before. The tip paid off: Garrisons scores an 8.1, #46 out of 140 burgers on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.

My order

A Gold Medal Burger, lettuce, onion and pickle only, in the quarter pounder size, for just $6.50. You can go bigger here too: a half pounder, a three quarter pounder and the monster, where they just keep stacking patties. Inside, I was shooting the breeze with the staff and a friendly local, who told me to check out Niko's while I was in the Falls. Friendly people in the Falls.

First look

A bun that wasn't toasted but was fresh, a patty that looked homemade and was sticking to the bun, plus lettuce, onion and pickle. Tons of juice.

First bite at the Five Corners

One bite, everybody knows the rules. I was starving, and I promised not to let that sway me, but it was a good start. The bun was the standout. Soft and fresh, and unlike another stop on the quest where a fresh bun overwhelmed the burger, here the bun to burger ratio was right.

  • Bun: Not toasted, but fresh and soft.
  • Patty: A homemade quarter pounder with plenty of juice.
  • Toppings: Lettuce, onion and pickle, all in good balance.
  • Value: $6.50 for a burger this good is excellent.

Sevens or eights?

We didn't even have to think about the sixes. I was juggling between the sevens and the eights. It's not at the level of oddbird, the quest leader, but it's a really good burger for the money. The staff also pushed their steak sub as the best around, so that's on my list for next time.

Friendly Falls

Everybody here was welcoming. The staff were happy to chat, a stranger handed me my next stop, and the whole visit felt easy. For a cheap, homemade quarter pounder, that kind of service is a bonus.

My verdict

An 8.1 at Garrisons Grill. If you're in Niagara Falls with seven bucks in your pocket, it's an easy call: head to the Five Corners.
