The Garden Houzz on Lakeshore Road sits in Wainfleet, my favourite place in the entire world. Even so, this was my first time eating there. The lamb-blend burger scores a 6.3, good for #104 out of 140 burgers on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.

How I ended up here

I'll admit there was a little history here. I hadn't planned to review the Garden Houzz, but a lot of people in Wainfleet kept telling me, "Joe, you've got to try the Garden Houzz." Then a server named Jillian posted a video inviting me out. In all the hundreds of restaurants on the quest, it was the first time anyone from a restaurant had made a video asking me to come try their burger. You invite me by video, you're getting in my good books. So we put aside our differences and showed up.

My order

A Gold Medal Burger with lettuce, onion and pickle only, at $15.25. Growing up in Wainfleet on a farm budget, that's not a price I'd have been paying, I'll tell you that. Inside, I had my eye on the night's special: filet mignon with a sauce, asparagus, beet salad and roasted potatoes. I don't think I could have dreamed up a better one.

A burger with a twist

The burger turned out to be 25% lamb. The sesame bun was toasted on every side, inside and out, with red onion, what looked like romaine and pickles. It smelled delicious even while I was paying at the counter.

First bite

She's hot and she's homemade, but she's different. I expected the lamb to make it juicier than it was. I love lamb and I love burgers, but I've decided the two should stay apart: either all lamb or no lamb.

  • Bun: Sesame, toasted on all four sides. A nice touch.
  • Patty: Homemade, hot, part lamb. Not as juicy as I hoped.
  • Toppings: Red onion, romaine and pickle.
  • Style: It reads as a Greek or Mediterranean burger. Maybe feta or a mint sauce would suit it better than lettuce, onion and pickle.
  • Value: On the pricier side for the quest.

My verdict

I gave it a 6.3. Somebody out there who loves a lamb burger might call it an 11 out of 10, and if it's your thing, it's your thing. It's just not mine. Jillian, though, gets a 10 out of 10 for the video invitation. And the first chance I get, I'm bringing Robyn back for date night and ordering whatever special is on. I asked her on camera, and she said yes.
