On the way to Pearson Airport, Robyn and I squeezed in a nighttime Gold Medal Burger review at Coop, 370 Brant Street in Burlington. Coop is a chicken place first, but the burger held its own. It scores an 8.7, good for #15 out of 140 burgers on my rankings.

A chicken place with a flat top

When I asked how the burger was, the guy at the counter said pretty good, but reminded me they're a chicken place. They do have a flat top, though, and they serve burgers. The place itself impressed me: big, clean, plenty of staff, and a Nintendo Wii set up with Mario Kart for kids and grown-ups.

My order

A hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only, for $13.54. It came in an interesting package and nearly took a tumble on the way out. A massive toothpick held together a toasted sesame seed bun that was still steaming, a big patty, horizontally sliced pickles, chopped lettuce and a little red onion.

First bite

One bite, everybody knows the rules. Hot off the grill, and my first bite missed the pickle completely, but it was still a good start. The flavour reminded me of a classic burger I love. The patty was juicy in an almost gravy-like way. Once I got into the onion and pickle, it picked up even more.

The breakdown

  • Bun: Toasted sesame seed bun. I really liked it, sesame seeds and all.
  • Patty: Big and juicy. I don't think they grind the beef in house, but it tasted good.
  • Toppings: Nice pickles, chopped lettuce and red onion, though a little light on the onion and pickle.
  • Value: $13.54 for a big patty is fair.

Better with every bite

The burger got better as it settled. There was nothing wrong with it, and Burlington was off to a better start than my last round of reviews in Hamilton.

My verdict

Coop lands a solid 8.7, a burger that improved with every bite. Robyn and I left planning to come back for the chicken, since that's what Coop says it does best. If the burger is this good, the chicken should be worth the trip.
