Grand Central Sports Bar Burger Review – Niagara Falls, ON
Grand Central Sports Restaurant at 4573 Queen Street, at the corner of Queen and Crysler in Niagara Falls, might be one of the biggest sports bars I've ever been in. It also serves one of the best value burgers on my quest. Grand Central scores an 8.5, good for #22 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.
Familiar territory
Robyn and I had been here before for my brother's birthday, where I was crowned champion of the night at the basketball games (after losing a game or two, I'll admit). This time it was all about the burger. Inside, the place was nice and dim, cozy for daytime, with TVs everywhere and staff who kept checking in. I counted at least three servers asking if we'd been looked after.
My order
The usual: a hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only. Grand Central knocked $2 off because I didn't want a side, bringing it to $6.78. That put them in my good books before I even opened the bag. There was ketchup in the bag, at least the third time that's happened to me in Niagara Falls, but no marks off for that unless it ends up on the burger.
The packaging was tight. Inside: what looked like a homemade patty, a big vertically sliced pickle that might have been bread and butter, iceberg lettuce and thin red onion on a soft, warm sesame seed bun.
First bite
One bite, everybody knows the rules. The burger was hot and fresh, the bun nice and soft. I don't think the pickle was homemade, but the burger was good, and I'll just say the last time we reviewed a burger on this corner, it was not this good.
It's a heavy burger with a big, thick patty. I almost got carried away with the score and had to dial myself in. It's not dripping in juices, but everything else is going on here.
Breaking it down
- Bun: Soft, warm sesame seed bun.
- Patty: Big, thick and likely homemade. Tasty, though not especially juicy.
- Toppings: Iceberg lettuce, thin red onion and a big store-bought pickle.
- Service: Friendly and on the ball.
- Value: Outstanding. Under $7 for a burger this size.
My verdict
My question is simple: what more can you expect from a burger under seven dollars? Big, tasty and served by a friendly crew, Grand Central lands smack dab at an 8.5. Robyn and I are coming back for football Sunday, burgers, beers and a basketball rematch.
