Moe's Tap & Wings Burger Review – Port Colborne, ON
Moe's Tap & Wings on Highway 3 in Port Colborne holds a lot of history for me. My friends and I started going there in high school (of age, of course), and we celebrated graduation there. But the Gold Medal Burger quest is about the burger, and this one scored a 4.7, good for #132 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.
My order
A hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only. In Port Colborne the prices stay friendly, and this one came to $10.17. I've been to Moe's a few times recently for beer and wings, and let me tell you, both are good.
A smiley face
The burger came in a styrofoam container with a smiley face drawn on it and a toothpick holding it together. Not a 10 just for that, but a nice touch. Inside: a toasted sesame seed bun, lettuce, onion, vertically sliced pickles and a bear claw patty. Backyard burger. One bite, everybody knows the rules.
First bite
Before digging in, I took a trip down memory lane. Believe it or not, this was my first time ever having a burger at Moe's, after all those years of visits. Then it was time to see what it could do. I went in open-minded. Sometimes backyard burgers surprise you, and sometimes homemade burgers are overcooked. The best backyard burger on the quest so far scored an 8.3, like somebody squeezed unicorn tears on it. This was not that. My take: the wings are much better.
The breakdown
- Bun: Toasted sesame seed.
- Patty: Bear claw style backyard burger, served hot.
- Pickles: Vertically sliced.
- Presentation: A smiley face on the box, which I appreciated.
- Value: $10.17 is affordable, but the specials board, with things like $5 Caesars, is where the real deals are.
My verdict
I hate giving out bad reviews, especially to a place that still holds a special spot in my heart. Moe's is friendly, the prices are good and its wings have been voted the best. But the burger is not the thing to get here. It's a 4.7. I'll be back, as long as Moe's lets me, for wings and beers.
