The Hungry Putter Burger Review – Wainfleet, ON
Wainfleet is my favourite place in the entire world, and The Hungry Putter on Lakeshore Road at Long Beach is a spot I've been visiting since I was a kid. I did a Must See Monday here and called the fries the best in the world. Now it was the burger's turn. The Hungry Putter scores a 7.9, #52 out of 140 on my Gold Medal Burger rankings.
Robyn and I had just finished a round of mini putt, playing skins. She had to win the last hole just to tie. A good, tight game.
My order
Lettuce, onion and pickle only, for $7.75. That's a good price. The presentation impressed me right away: horizontally ruffle cut pickles laid out as evenly as I've ever seen, a homemade six ounce patty, ringed red onion and lettuce on a bun that wasn't toasted.
First bite at Long Beach
One bite, everybody knows the rules. Something a little different. A perfect amount of pickle in every bite, and homemade burger all day long. No backyard burgers here. I thought there might be some kind of sauce in the meat, possibly barbecue, and there was a little sweetness I couldn't pin down, either from the meat or the pickle.
Breaking it down
- Bun: Not toasted, and the bun to burger ratio was just a touch off.
- Patty: Homemade six ounce, juicy, with a flavour I couldn't quite identify.
- Pickles: Five slices, by far the best pickle distribution on the quest.
- Value: $7.75 for a six ounce homemade burger.
No bias here
I love this place and the staff watch my reviews, but if I were biased, they'd be getting a 10. To settle it, I tried the patty on its own. Really good.
My verdict
A 7.9 for a really good burger. The fries are still as close to a 10 as you can get, and the homemade ice cream sandwiches are the best in town. My perfect day at Long Beach: mini putt and fries here, dinner at DJ's, and a walk on the beach.
