I'd been to Tailgates Bar and Grill at the corner of Fitch and Prince Charles in Welland a handful of times for beer and wings, but never for a burger. My Gold Medal Burger quest changed that. Tailgates scored a 7.5, #68 out of 140 burgers on my rankings.

The guy at the bar told me the patty is homemade and that he'd seen the videos. He said he likes the honest reviews, even after I gave a low score to one of my own favourite wing spots. Honest is the only way I do it.

A detour to the payphone

Before the burger, I had to show off something you don't see every day: a working payphone outside, dial tone and all. Then a family of birds showed up to watch the review. Our first gallery of fans with feathers on the quest.

My order

Lettuce, onion and pickle only, for $9.03. The bartender knew the rules. The burger had some weight to it, at least a six ouncer by my guess, with lettuce, sliced red onion and two huge pieces of pickle on a toasted bun, held together with toothpicks. Burger eaters beware.

First bite

One bite, everybody knows the rules, and a whole pickle came along with it. The patty was good, with a nice coating on the outside and a lot of flavour. I thought I could see coriander or some kind of seed in the mix, and it almost tasted like a meatball, so maybe there are breadcrumbs in there. It was cooked well, not dry, but not juicy either.

Patty, pickles and the rest

  • Bun: Big and toasted.
  • Patty: Homemade and very tasty, but missing some juice.
  • Pickles: Two huge slices, more like sides of pickle. Half came out in one bite. I want them sliced horizontally for even distribution.
  • Toothpicks: No mark taken off, but watch out.
  • Value: $9.03 for a burger this size is solid.

My verdict

I really liked what was going on inside this patty. It's homemade, packed with flavour, and something they clearly put thought into. The pickle distribution and the missing juices kept it from going higher, so Tailgates lands at a nice round 7.5. It's not just a spot for wings and beer: you can grab a burger here too.
