After a detour into pizza, I brought the Gold Medal Burger quest back on St. Patrick's Day, and there was only one fitting place to do it: Doc Magilligan's Restaurant & Irish Pub on Lundy's Lane in Niagara Falls. I dressed for the occasion, and the burger scored a 7.5, #69 out of 140 burgers on my rankings.

I wanted to bring my Guinness outside to wash the burger down, but they told me no dice. No problem. I saved it for after the review.

My order

A hamburger with lettuce, onion and pickle only, which came to $18.08. I'd been to Doc Magilligan's once or twice before but never had the burger, and rumour has it the chef is one of the best around. It came wrapped in paper, fish and chips style, which I liked.

It came on what looked like a brioche bun, held together with a toothpick, with iceberg lettuce, a little onion, a double patty and pickle spears on the side. Robyn helped me get the spears onto the burger before the first bite.

First bite

It was hot. One bite, everybody knows the rules. The patties were nice, cooked well and seasoned well, and the double patty made for a pretty good burger. The beef reminded me a little of a Wendy's style patty. The lettuce was crunchy and there was lots of it, and the onions were fresh.

The pickles were the sticking point. Spears are not my favourite way of distributing pickle, and I wish they'd been sliced.

The breakdown

  • Bun: Brioche style, soft and smooth.
  • Patty: Double patty, well seasoned and cooked right.
  • Toppings: Lots of crunchy lettuce and fresh onion, but pickle spears instead of slices.
  • Value: $18.08, one of the pricier stops.

My verdict

A 7.5, right in the middle. It's good beef in a fun Irish pub, and I was happy to finish it off inside with that Guinness. I also spotted Reuben bites on the menu that were unreal, so there may be more reasons to come back. Happy St. Paddy's Day from Doc Magilligan's.
